This is the second time I have been to Munich, Germany. The first time was 10 years ago. I remember booking near the Munich Hauptbahnhof (or Hbf which is the main terminal) 10 years ago at Best Western Atrium. This time, I booked in Mercure Hotel City Centre which is just 5 minutes or less walk from the Munich Hbf if you get out from the Bayestrasse exit.

The Mercure Hotel City Centre in Munich is a chic, modern, and 4-stars property of the Accor Hotel chain. I like booking hotels under the Accor brand because I al familiar with the level of service, cleanliness, and price they offer to customers like myself.

What I like:

Location – It is very near the Munchen Hbf and it is easy to find as long as you exit near the Bayestrasse exit point when arriving at the Hbf. It is also just 15 minutes walk to Marienplatz, and 10 minutes walk to Karlspatz.

Room – The room is spacious with enough space to walk around without bumping to any furniture or your family/friends, space for big luggages, separate entry hall from the bedroom so you can close the door of the bedroom while your family or friends prepare their tea or coffee from the mini-bar and closet area outside near the entry of the room.

Cleanliness – The hotel is clean. It may not be spotless but it is still a very clean room where you will not see much dust nor dirty linens hanging around.

Bathroom – The bathroom is modern and very spacious. It has a separate shower area with a glass wall as a divider. The toiletries comprise of a hand soap, vanity kit, and a sewing kit. A common bath gel for head and body is already provided in the shower area.

Staff – Alicia was the staff who greeted us when my friend and I arrived at the hotel. Although our train arrived at 07:00 a.m. and reached the hotel around 7:45 a.m, I knew we were very early. She welcomed us and asked us to just leave the luggages for a while since the room is not yet ready. She gave us tips on how to reach the Marienplatz so we could start our day while waiting for the room. We came back around 11:00 and the room was ready. She was still the staff who was on the counter. The check in was quick and she offered us complimentary hot drinks or any drinks we wish from the bar for me and my friend. All the staff we see in the hallway, the lobby, the counters, and even the housekeeping were very friendly and kept saying “hi.” It was a very pleasant exchange because I wasn’t expecting everyone to be very jovial in a cold, snowy day. But I am very happy and pleased with the staff. They were courteous and pleasant to deal with.

Free wifi – Who passes up for a free wifi? The connection was fast. And my friend and I connected our phones, and my iPad without any issues on the number of device connected.

Comfort – The bed is super comfortable. I had good sleep during our stay. It was very soft and the pillows were enough to keep me in la la land. The lounge chair was also a bonus in comfort. After walking for several hours each day, I would sit in the cozy lounge chair in the room and just relax. I even recalled my friend saying she wanted one like the lounge chair to give to her mum. And I agree with her. The study table was long enough to place many stuff like our food, water, beauty kits, etc.  The room we have was in the corner and it is very quiet.  We were facing the courtyard behind the hotel which was empty the whole time because it was snowy and cold. We could also open the window a little to let fresh air in unlike other hotels in Europe where it get so stuffy because of the heater and you couldn’t even open the window.

Lighting – I like that the lights were enough to make the room bright. I also like that my friend and I had both light switches on each of our side of the bed so if I didn’t want to disturb her, I could use the small pin light to illuminate my area.

What I don’t like:

Price – Much as I love the hotel and most of Accor hotels, the price is rather steep for a 4-star property if compared to other hotels in the same area. However, I know the quality of service, cleanliness, and comfort they offer so I also think that the price is right given the location and space of the accommodation. Also, the other cheaper hotels in the same area had bad reviews and most customers complained of “bed bugs.” So far, we didn’t have any issues with any Accor hotels we have stayed in the past, including this one.

No breakfast with our rate – For the price we paid for 2 nights, we could have at least breakfast included with the steep price.

My recommendation:    5 out of 5 stars

Whether we paid a bit steep or not, the hotel deserves the price tag because its location cannot be beaten. It is very near major landmarks in Munich and the Marienplatz area where the Rathaus, Glockenspiel, and where they set up the Christmas Market are all within walking distance. And the level of comfort is also superb. I always have good sleep in all the Accor hotels I booked. And that expectation is met again in Mercure Hotel.

The staff are all friendly and polite. For an Asian like myself, I always pay attention to how I am treated especially in foreign countries. I am happy to say that I felt very welcomed in this hotel where everyone just greeted us wherever we see the staff in the lobby, near the restaurant, along the hallway leading to our room. Everyone was very warm and welcoming. I will definitely consider staying back in Mercure despite of the price tag.

If you are looking for a nice, spacious room, comfortable beds, and good location, stay in Mercure Hotel City Centre in Munich. Leave the stress of calling cabs to get to your hotel. Just walk from the Munich Hbf’s main exit/entrance to Mercure Hotel in Senefelder Str. 9.
